Contubernium:
One contubernium
The contubernium* was the smallest unit in the legion. Consisting of eight legionaires*, they all fought, traveled and camped together. And when it was time to set up camp, they all shared quarters in a tent. However, when it came to being punished or rewarded, it wasn't done separately. It was done all together. So if one person were to bring shame to their contubernium, then the whole squad was punished.
Not much can be found about the contubernium except for that their officer was a non-commissioned officer who carried out the duties of organizing the marching tent and keeping the men disciplined. Supposedly, the main job of the contubernium was to scout around and ahead of a legion if traveling.
