Praefectus Castrorum:
A Praefectus Castrorum
Also known as the camp Prefect, the Praefectus Castrorum was third in command, obvioulsy taking control if both the Legatus Legionis and Tribunus Laticlavius weren't there. Originally an ex-primus pilus or the first centurion of a legion, he was also a serving veteran that had been advanced through ranks of centurions.
Besides being third in the branch of the legion, he was also the camp commander for when it was time travel. He decided camp sites, oversaw the construction of the temporary camp and inspected tent lines. If it was time to get moving, he would order the camp to break up. If he wanted to stop so his soldiers could rest, he would directed the camp to be set up. And if the camp was permanent, he supervised the construction of barrack-blocks, wells and aqueducts and the buildings inside the camp. But when it came to wars and battles, he predicted the number of ammunition supplies and battering rams*. And if there was an attack on their camp, he led the legionaires and gave out the orders.
Typically in their late fifties with an extra thirty years of experience, the Praefectus Castrorum was also the officer of medici*, mensores* and the horologiarius* and he oversaw the supply of medical equipment for the valetudinarium*. So any legionaires injured in battle, he could attend to them.
The role of the Praefectus Castrorum was a major role in the legion, despite being third in command. Without a person in charge of medical equipment and being a doctor, any life-threatening injuries without attention, could seriously ruin the legion. The legion would lose numerous men due to infectionous injuries that were acquired in battles.
