The Imperial Army of Rome:
Roman legions
Learning about the Roman legions is difficult and abstruse because the legions consist of so many men, rankings and order. And each legion was slightly different when all the legions were placed for war. However, the basic units of the legion are pretty simple to understand, including where the cohorts stood in battle and what order.
As you know, the Legions of Rome were pretty famous for managing to conquer so many countries. Not just that, they were also pretty successful in conquering lands because they "played" offense more than defense. If they felt threatened by an their enemy, then they would attack first and go to war.
In early Rome however, there was a tradition before going to war. They never seemed to have enough war gods but one well respected Roman goddess was Bellona next to Mars or Ares in Greek. Her name is derived from the Latin word for war, bellum and her more famous counterpart was Bellona instead of Enyo (Greek). She represented foreign policy of Rome and oversaw them when they went to war. In honor of her, a temple was built with soil around it that stood for foreign soil. And when they declared war, they symbolically threw a spear into the dirt. Sure, it doesn't sound that terrifying but just you wait. Because when the legions show up in your city, you'll have the sense to quake in fear and run.
The unfortunate thing though is that the temple of Bellona was burned in 48 B.C. ; having to built in 296 B.C. But the festival for her still occurred which was on June 3 for them.
So as you can see, the Romans were very famous for their legions, for their war gods and how they declared war. Not to mention, they're complex systems within the legion revealed the structure, similar to our army.
